My Phone Protection of Choice: UgoWear
It’s hard to really call this product a “phone case” because it is so much more than that. The UgoWear is like a Drysuit & life jacket combined!
I learned about Ugowear for the first time at the Hartford Boat show when their booth was right around the corner from the Three Belles Marina booth. Walked by once or twice and saw a couple of friendly ladies with big fish bowls on a table… and their phones just chillin’ in the water. I think the first time I walked by their booth I didn’t really even know what I was looking at. A little while later the two ladies caught a break from visitors and I went over to introduce myself.
In addition to being incredibly friendly, I quickly learned a couple of other things about these two women. First and foremost, they’re some of the nicest most upbeat people you’ll meet at a boat show. Secondly, they really had one heck of a product to show me.
Melanie and Vicky created the Ugowear to be better than any other “phone case” on the market. And let me tell you, they did exactly that! I spent some time with these ladies, tested the Ugo to see how it fit my own phone, saw all the color options they had, etc. It didn’t take long for them to win me over as a believer. Went home that day with a Ugowear phone case, and it’s some of the best money I’ve spent!
I’ve been thru at least ten products over the past five years claiming to be “waterproof” solutions for my phone. I’ve tried dry bags, dry boxes, lifeproof, those little hang-around-the-neck pouches, and I’ve always been disappointed. My biggest problem with the typical drybag or drybox is that you have to take the phone out of the protective dry enclosure in order to use the phone. Every time you want to answer a call, send a text, or take a picture, you’re putting your phone at risk. For lack of a better analogy, it would be like a guy on a motorcycle cruising down the highway and taking his helmet off for a few moments so he can see better. Sounds like a pretty dumb idea, doesn’t it?!
Now I know a lot of people have had good luck with Lifeproof and similar cases. However, as a contractor and plug builder, those cases have never treated me well. I’ve actually argued with employees at the cell phone store in order to return a $100 otter box case that didn’t work like they said it would. Believe me, if dust can get into the phone case, so can water. And I know several people who have had lifeproof/otterbox cases fail and killed their phone. Additionally, if you drop your phone in the water while kayaking, a lifeproof might keep your phone dry briefly, but it’s still going to sink.
Enter UGOWEAR! Not only does the Ugo fit just about any modern smartphone you throw at it, there’s room for an ID, few bank cards, a couple keys, and THEY STILL FLOAT! On top of all that, these drybags are built well and built tough. The Ugowear case has the same hardcore waterproof zipper as my $1000 Level Six drysuit. No halfway cheap materials on the Ugowear. I’m going to take this next part straight from their website, because I can’t say it any better…
“The Mossy Oak Camo pack is constructed with Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) material and a German engineered 100% waterproof zipper. All seams are RF Welded ensuring an airtight, watertight seal. While this pack will fit any phone, it was SPECIFICALLY designed for the LARGEST PHONES paired with the LARGEST CASES, like those offering drop proof protection.”
That’s an official way of say: these UgoWear cases are bad-ass.
Within the first few weeks that I owned a Ugo, I went with a few guys down to Florida for a kayak fishing tournament. Two nights before the tournament we were out fishing off the coast of Pompano Beach trying to learn the area a little. One of the other guys and I both flipped our kayaks that night in the surf coming back in to the beach. I had my phone in my new Ugo, but my buddy did not. My phone was 100% safe, secure, and undamaged. My buddy, however, completely killed his iPhone (even know it was in a supposedly waterproof lifeproof case). After that incident, I was really sold on Ugo!
So, take a few moments, go over to the ugowear website and pick one out for yourself! Trust me, do it just this once, and you’ll never have to worry about killing your phone on the water again.
