Bucktails - our own 365 LureCraft deer tails
Frustrated with the quality and consistency of the deer tails coming through the big distributors, we found ourselves knee deep in the bucktail world. We’re sourcing these tails from a variety of vendors around New England and beyond. Each and every tail that bears the 365 LureCraft name has been personally processed, inspected, graded, and dyed in-house.
Often the best way to pick out the tails that are best for YOU is to see them in person with your own two eyes. We’re grading tails based on several standards, including overall size, hair length, fullness, shape, and general appearance. We’re doing our best to ensure that you’re always happy with tails you receive bearing the 365 LureCraft name, hopefully feeling that you got your money’s worth. That said, there is always variation, and one expert to the next can have very subjective opinions on such a naturally variable product. Some more details on each category:
“Large” tails are average to slightly above average tails with hair averaging 3”+ in length. Some “Large” tails might appear small at first glance, but have longer hair fibers. Other tails might have average length hair fibers, but be over-sized tails. The vast majority of our tails fall into this “Large” category, but we’re confident they are nicer and larger than the so-called ‘large’ coming from the big distributors

“Medium” tails are good quality tails that are just not quite ‘large’ size. These often compare to the Medium/Large size tails we see from the big distributors. Plenty of usable hair, but generally we’re looking at a slightly smaller than average tail.
“Dink” tails are generally just small or thin tails. These generally come from deer harvested in late summer or early fall, before the hair has really thickened and filled in. Or sometimes it was just poor work with the knife. Either way, these are discounted price because they just aren’t up to our other standards.
“Select” tails are above-average for at least two of the usual standards; mostly hair fibers 4” or longer, larger overall size, and/or just a tail that makes us say “wow, that’s a nice tail!”.
“Premium” tails are the best of the best tails; majority of hair is very long (4.5-5” or longer), extra large overall size, and a tail that stands out above the rest.
Just a few notes on bucktails before you go… Yes, these are natural products, literally from the butt of a whitetail deer. There will be variations in size, hair length, color, texture, and more. We do our very best to ensure quality and standards, but please let us know if you feel like you received less than you paid for. Also, because these are processed and packaged in-house, there can be a slight odor and sometimes moisture within the tail. We would rather package tails that have a little life left in them, as opposed to putting them in a commercial dryer and making the finished product virtually unusable.
If you’re unsure what category of tail you need, please feel free to reach out by email. Again, our primary concern is a quality product that over-delivers when compared to the competitors.
Most of our tails are packaged with desiccant cards to prevent moisture and mold, but we recommend proper care to prevent issues. Be sure to close the bag tightly when storing your tails. Store in a cool, dry place. If grease or mold does appear on the hide, wipe with Dawn or degreaser, then dry and store properly.
